OUR VEIN TREATMENT SERVICES – Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

spacer

Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy can be used for treatment of varicose veins. Foamed Sclerosant is injected into the diseased segment of vein under Ultrasound guidance. Foam allows a minimum concentration of sclerosant to be used.

Occasionally ultrasound guided scleotherapy is used as primary or secondary treatment of incompetent saphenous veins. When a diseased segment of saphenous vein is is too tortuous to treat with a straight laser fiber, foamed sclerosant can be placed under ultrasound guidance to allow treatment of this segment. Several treatments may be required to fully treat the vein in question.

Ultrasound guidance is not required
for treatment of spider veins.

Foamed Sclerosant
The most commonly used sclorosants are detergents that cause a disruption in the lining of the vein.

Detergents can be easily foamed by mixing them with air, carbon dioxide or some combination of the two. The mixture is usually three to four parts air to one part liquid sclerosant.

Foaming the sclerosant allows use of a smaller, less concentrated amount of liquid sclerosant. The foam provides better, more prolonged contact with the lining of the vein and a more uniform distribution of that lining.

Patient Instructions After Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy
Wear your graduated compression hose continuously for 72 hours and then daily for an additional seven days. You should put your compression hose on while lying flat in bed or sitting in a chair.
Walk for 15 minutes at least twice daily.
Talk all your medications as prescribed.
Take Ibuprofen 600 mg every to 12 hours for aching or discomfort in your legs. Please remember not to exceed the recommended daily dosage. Do not take Ibuprofen for more than seven days continuously. If you have significant discomfort please call our office at 920-884-8346.
Avoid strenuous activity such as bike riding, hiking, jogging, weight training or situps for seven days after the procedure.
Avoid hot tubs hot baths for seven days after the procedure as these tend to dilate the veins.
You should avoid air travel for at least one week after the procedure.
If you notice significant swelling in the treated leg, notify our office immediately.
If you notice a firm tender area along a treated vein this may be trapped blood. Although in most cases trapped blood will luquify and dissolve over time, the overlying skin can stain which takes months or years to resolve. For that reason they are best treated by aspiration. Please contact our office. We can easily aspirate/remove this superficial clot during a short office visit.
